Recap of My Signing - The Most Popular Book Being Cinders

I was so nervous for my book signing/sale on Friday, if you couldn't tell from my previous post. However, I'm excited to let you know how well the event went! I showed up and set up my stuff, just a small table filled with my books, bookmarks, and my poster. Oh, and candy. I should have taken a picture, but I didn't. Sorry! I sat down and waited. Surprisingly, within the first hour, I sold five books. I was surprised! I expected to sell that for the entire day! Several friends showed up to see me and buy a copy of my short story collection, True Colors. I sat next to two very nice women who kept me company the whole day, and near the end of the day an amazing music group came to play Christmas music. This guy had an electric mandolin. That is the most beautiful instrument ever!

The amazing thing? I kept selling books! All day.

What sold my books?

I talked to people. I stood up and called them over and told them they could have some candy. I asked how they were doing and talked to them about things other than my books. If they looked interested in what was on the table, I told them more about each book, conveying my excitement for each one.

Which was the most popular book?

Cinders!

So popular that I sold out! Of course, it was the one I had the least amount of copies, but still. You know, when you say, "It's the story of Cinderella and what happens after she gets married," people's eyes light up. They snatch the book and look at it. People love fairy tales, even when I tell them it's an unexpected punch-in-the-gut-ending. After that, they seem even more interested. This doesn't surprise me, though. One lady stopped and saw Monarch and said, "Oh! I read that! I found it here in the library."The other wonderful thing? When someone buys your book and hugs it to their chest and says they can't wait to read it - and you can tell they really can't wait to read your book. It was also great to have a large book group invite me to their Monarch meeting once they've read the book this month.

This is what being an author is all about. I didn't sell that many books, but I sold them consistently, and I made enough to recoup my costs of doing the event - and more! I feel down all the time about sales and all these numbers many authors constantly obsess about. I get down thinking I'll never make it big or make a lot of money or ever be truly known or win some special award or something. But whenever I sit down to work on my next book or do an event like this, I remember why I do this - the same reason I did it before I was ever published. It's all about the stories and sharing them with readers, whether that be one reader or millions.

  1. Yay! I'm glad the book signing went so well. Plus, Cinders is awesome! True, I loved MONARCH too, but there is something about fairy tales. :)

  3. So true, Michelle. I'm so glad the signing went well. That really is wonderful news! :o) That's one major thing I'm lacking here in Greece, the ability to do signings and have people actually come--that read English!

  4. No photo? Boo! Still, it sounds like you had a great time and connected with readers, and as you say, that's what it's all about!

Candy was a good idea. Candy is always a good idea. Speaking of which, Mary discovered this weekend that someone is making chocolate-filled candy canes. I had no idea.

  5. Congrats on all the sales! And thanks for sharing the experience. It's something every author dreams (but also kind of dreads. It can be such a bubble-burster when you only make two or three sales. It sounds like your publicity and professionalism won the day. And that's very nice to hear about Cinders. I agree it has a fabulous hook.

  6. Michelle, The experience sounds really wonderful, and I'm glad you had fun! The woman who said she had read Monarch must have been so exciting for you!

  7. How very cool! And I think you hit it on the head. Connecting with people. That's why I do this too. :)

And congratulations on the consistent sales!

  8. That's great! Congrats on all those sales. :)

  9. That's great Michelle.

What did the strangers buy? How did they take to three books? (I.e. would a stranger rather invest in a novella, a novel or a collection of short stories? (I'm assuming you had all three there.))

Also, did your candy last all seven hours? And did anyone take candy and not buy anything?

Back on topic, I think your being able to stand up and call out to people probably helped quite a bit.

  10. Congrats, Michelle, on such an awesome evening! I'm sure your confidence in your stories and your enthusiasm positively affected customers, so much so, I can't wait to get a copy of "Cinders" - yes, there's something about fairy tales!

  12. Of course they snatch it! What a pitch! I'm so glad your signing went well. Sounds like so much fun!

  13. I'm with Scott. Candy was a brilliant idea. Chocolate-filled candy canes is also a brilliant idea. So brilliant it makes me wish I wasn't allergic to peppermint. Candy aside, I'm glad you had such a positive experience! May they all be like that! *crosses fingers* ^.~

  14. OK- I'm back with good news. I just ordered me some books from Amazon for Christmas and added "Cinders" to the list! I can't wait to read it! You totally hooked me!

  15. I'm kind of not surprised to hear this because Cinders was such a great book! I really loved it. The poetry in your words. (Of course, that's what I'm finding about True Colors and kind of wanting to kill you for your talent).

  16. I hope to have such fun someday. We need to find Dragon shaped candies.

  17. Cherie: There truly is something about fairy tales. They stick around for a reason!

Cynthia: Aww, thank you! I try to be happy all the time, but things can sure get me down if I'm not careful.

Jessica: Aww, that makes me sad! Really sad. I wish you could take a trip over here.

Scott: I know! I should have at least taken a photo with my phone or something. Boo is right. CHOCOLATE-FILLED CANDY CANES? Oh my gosh. Can I buy some?

Anne: Yeah, dreading is definitely in the equation, and I remember thinking during the event that I'd rather not be there, but I made myself enjoy it despite my nervousness.

Davin: She was, I think! It was cool to see someone I have no connections to at all who had read and enjoyed my book.

Janet: Connecting with people is definitely the key. I even made some new friends. :)

    Ghenet: Thank you!

Jake: Ooo, questions! The strangers bought all three, meaning all three sold. It was fairly split for all three, but Cinders sold out because I had less copies. It was the most popular, though, in that it seemed to spark the most interest and excitement in people.

My candy lasted all seven hours, yes! I bought a lot, hah. Many children took candy, yes. I encouraged it because I bought to give away, anyway.

Kittie: Oh, I hope you get a copy! It's certainly not a fairy tale, but being based on one makes it sparkle!

    Caroline: Very much! :)

Karen: Ugh, I know! I know the library got some. I thought they would post them, but they haven't so far.

Leigh: Thank you! And wow, thanks for ordering Cinders! So glad I hooked you! Hope you like it!

Becca: If I had displayed chocolate-filled candy canes, I would have sold more books, I'm sure of it. You're allergic to peppermint? What the heck?!

Laura: Aww, you're making me blush! I'm excited to hear what you think of the whole thing when you finish - if any of the stories were just too odd for your taste, or if you like them all.

    Anthony: Yay!

Lester: I am sure such a thing exists! It has to!

  18. Oh, this post is so awesome. *clicks the like button*

It sounds like it was so fun. The candy is brilliant! I'm going to steal that idea, I know it.

What a beautiful final thought too.

  19. I'm so glad it went well. That interaction must make all the hard work worth it.

  20. Everyone that meets you will want to talk to you Michelle. Seriously...you told me that I may have chosen the wrong career. Well I'm here to tell you that I think you chose the wrong career. You could be a politician easy...people love you. I think you could be the first female president. Just sayin'. I'd vote for Michelle. :)

  21. N.M.: You should! Have you done any signings yet?

Sarah: It definitely made it worth it. It was a lot of fun to talk to people. :)

Michael: LOL, you're funny, Michael. I loathe politics and would probably make a terrible president. Or maybe that would make me a good president. :)

  22. No, haha. Coming up in the next year, I plan on going to Anime conventions (which I do anyway, lol) and those'll be my signings. I'm having a friend who makes plushies sit with me and we'll hawk our wares together.

Anime-lovers are sort of my target audience.

    ReplyDelete
  23. N.M.: Ooo! That sounds interesting! If you appeal so much to Anime, is there a reason you don't have traditional Anime on the covers? Just curious. I have a friend who adores Anime, and I am getting into it, too.

  24. There's a certain mood set by the super-deformed characters that I think would have detracted from the story. People see anime art and they think of Pokemon and kids programs.

Also, anime fans love good art in any style, which is another reason for the original cover. I'm kind of super excited to go this year. Even if I don't sell books, it's a great chance to meet artists for future covers.

  25. Thank you for sharing! Sounds like the signing was one of the best events to date. How exciting that your books had reader interest the entire time and you got to finish the time off with good Christmas music!

Here's hoping that your experience many similar things to help re-affirm that your writing is enjoyed. *hugs*

  26. Nina: That makes a lot of sense, yeah. I really hope that event goes well!

Alicia: Thank you! Yes, the event helped me realize a few very important things. Priceless!
