Do you know what a vignette is? The online magazine, Vine Leaves, describes a vignette as "a word that originally meant 'something that may be
written on a vine-leaf.' It’s a snapshot in words. It differs from flash
fiction or a short story in that its aim does not lie within the realms
of traditional structure or plot. The vignette focuses on one element,
mood, character, setting or object. It's descriptive, excellent for
character or theme exploration and wordplay. Through a vignette, you
create an atmosphere
I adore vignettes. I haven't written a lot of them because, honestly, there really aren't a lot of places to publish such things. I am happy to announce, however, that today my vignette, "White," is published in the online literary journal, Vine Leaves.
Check it out for free. I'm on Page 3. Look, it rhymes!
Take time today to read something that only takes a moment. I often find it's the littlest stories that touch me the most deeply. Perhaps that's because I remember them better, or perhaps it's because they concentrate on a mood more than plot. Who knows, but I love them! Vine Leaves is filled with such beautiful little stories. I'm excited to start browsing through it! Hope you do, too.

I don't read vignettes very often, but yours was beautiful. You managed to do exactly what a vignette is supposed to do-- capture a snapshot of emotion in so very few words. Bravo. :)
ReplyDeleteAh, this post came RIGHT on time! Today is Freebie Friday at Reader's Den. I was looking for something free and literary to feature. Here's my answer. ^_^
ReplyDeleteNicely done! Really nice.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you've shown this to me before (on quickquills back in 2009, maybe?), and it's one of my favorite of your short pieces. I'm glad it found a home at last!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I sometimes write little segments like this when they come to me - I guess I just never realized what I was doing had a name =)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Very evocative. What a poem does, but in prose form.
ReplyDeleteOops, I ought to put the comment here instead of Facebook, huh?
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting your vingette White published, Michelle!
Made me nostalgic for my Grandma Hilda. Even though I don't think she ever had a white fence, she too had her favorite yearly activities to bind the family together in spite of the underlying wear and tear.
Thank you for sharing!
The magazine looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteNo more rhyming now, I mean it! ;)
ReplyDeleteOh, and the link isn't working for me :( won't connect to the site.
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, everyone for checking this out! Your kind words have made my day. :)
ReplyDeleteNot sure what happened yesterday but it worked today :) I love the line about the clouds shifting back and forth reflecting the colors... but then I always love the way you describe things!
ReplyDeleteLovely piece, Michelle.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful, fleeting moment of a loved one's passing. I think I have a fondness for vignettes because of that whole "capturing one moment" thing. After all, it's the tiny moments that fill up our lives.
ReplyDeleteThe piece has a lovely atmosphere, Michelle! Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou are all very kind, thank you!
ReplyDeleteI missed your Grandma right along with you. Excellent job!
